Video by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA).

Overloaded extension boards, cracked plugs and wiring run under carpets are so common they feel normal. The video is filmed in Canada, but every hazard in it shows up in Pakistani homes too.

Five things to look for today

  • Extension boards plugged into other extension boards.
  • Plugs or sockets that are warm, discoloured or loose.
  • Cables running under rugs or through door frames.
  • Appliances near water — especially in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • A main board with no earthing or unlabelled breakers.
